Kate Jones is an artist born and based in Naarm (Melbourne), whose practice is grounded in clay. She studied ceramics at Box Hill TAFE and fine arts/ceramics at RMIT University and is currently President of Australian Ceramics Association.

Jones creates large scale, slab built ceramic forms that become supports for painterly surfaces of slips and glazes. She works with the presence of these objects, sometimes breaking them down with washes of colour and light, sometimes giving them a dark and almost menacing solidity.

Writing, curating, and teaching are all integral parts of Jones’ practice, informing both conceptual and technical aspects of her exhibition work. And she loves to sit down at the wheel and throw a functional pot.

Over the past couple of years the Provenance Project (a collaboration with Parker Lev Dupain) has provided new ground to work into the poetics, politics, and practicalities of matter. It is a research undertaking generating field work, photography, writing and technical experimentation. It enriches the possibilities of connecting with materials in manifold ways and of working across disciplines.
