Jane Sawyer is based in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. Her studio practice is centred on the materiality of clay and it’s power to create connection through the sense of touch. This focus has extended to include responses to environmental degradation and climate change through installations that use the object as a call to action and/or an unnerving warning. Her output over a thirty year career includes exhibitions, limited edition runs, commissions and collaborations. She holds a Masters of Fine Art by research from RMIT University and is the is the founder of Slow Clay Centre, an education centre for ceramic study established in 2012 (Melbourne).

Sawyer is an active supporter of ceramics, makers and craft in general. She sat on the board of Craft Victoria (2014-17), is a founding board member of World Craft Council - Australia (2015-2021) and is an elected member of the International Academy of Ceramics (Geneva). As director of Slow Clay Centre, she supports many artists through workshops, events and panel discussions and encourages a wide approach to learning.

Sawyer exhibits nationally and internationally and maintains a close relationship with Shussai-Gama, a studio in Japan where she trained when young. She has enjoyed invitations as a guest artist at residences and symposiums and her work has received many awards and is held in public collections including The Museum in International Ceramic Art, Denmark, Hikawa City, Japan, Shepparton Art Museum, Victoria and many private collections.
